IGU vs IGR Airport: Which One Is Better for Iguazu Falls?
Iguazu Falls is served by two main airports: IGU on the Brazilian side and IGR on the Argentine side. Both can work very well, but the best choice depends on where you are staying, which country your flight network favors and how much cross-border travel you want to do on arrival or departure day.
What is IGU?
IGU is Foz do Iguaçu International Airport in Brazil. It is the natural choice for travelers staying in Foz do Iguaçu and is convenient for the Brazilian national park, Bird Park and other attractions on the Brazilian side.
It is also a practical airport for travelers who plan to visit both countries but prefer to keep their hotel base in Brazil.
What is IGR?
IGR is Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport in Argentina. It is the natural airport for travelers staying in Puerto Iguazú or using domestic flights within Argentina.
Because IGR is in Argentina, travelers staying in Brazil need to include an international border crossing in the transfer between the airport and their hotel.
Which airport is closer to the falls?
Both airports are close to their respective national parks, so distance alone should not decide the trip. The bigger question is which side you will sleep on and whether you want to cross the border immediately after landing or shortly before departure.
Which airport is easier if you stay in Foz do Iguaçu?
IGU is usually the simpler option because you remain in Brazil after landing. Your transfer does not begin with immigration, and it is easy to organize a Brazilian-side visit, hotel check-in or a same-day private itinerary around the flight.
Which airport is easier if you stay in Puerto Iguazú?
IGR is usually more convenient for a Puerto Iguazú stay because the airport and hotel are in the same country. This can be especially useful when your Argentina itinerary connects through Buenos Aires.
Can a tour start or end at the airport?
Private tours can often be planned around an airport arrival or departure when the flight time allows it. IGU pickup and drop-off can be integrated directly into suitable private itineraries.
IGR pickup works differently. SigaFoz uses an authorized Argentine remis partner for the airport-to-border segment and meets passengers at the agreed immigration point. Private tours can finish with an IGR drop-off when the schedule is feasible.
What if you are carrying luggage?
On private services, luggage can generally travel in the vehicle during the sightseeing day when arranged in advance. Always tell the operator how many suitcases you have so the correct vehicle can be assigned.
Should airport choice affect your hotel choice?
It can. If you want the simplest arrival, staying in the same country as your arrival airport reduces one border crossing. If your flights are significantly better into the other airport, however, the border is manageable with proper transfer planning.
Our practical recommendation
Choose the airport that gives you the best combination of flight schedule, fare and hotel location. Do not assume that one airport is universally better. For a short trip, reducing unnecessary border crossings can save useful time. For a longer trip, flight convenience may matter more.
If you send SigaFoz your flight number, airport, hotel and planned tour dates, we can help you build the sightseeing order around the real logistics of the trip.
